I recently bought a USB to HDMI converter cable to try to use a Vizio E320i-B1 television as a monitor for my Macbook Air. When I go to System Preferences > Displays, I hold the alt/option key and click "Detect Displays," but the TV still doesn't show up.

How can I get my Macbook to recognize the TV? Is that possible with a USB to HDMI converter?

Thanks.

System Specs:

MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2013)
OS X Yosemite, version 10.10.5
1.3 GHz Intel Core i5
4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Solution
That is a CHARGER cable.

"Only support can provide charging, cannot pass the video data."

It's not an adapter at all.

Even in the Q&A

Question: Is this plug and play? Does it work for Macbook Air?

Answer: Sorry,Does not support Macbook Air,Only support can provide charging, cannot pass the video data.
