Macbook Air w/USB to HDMI converter won't recognize external TV display

I recently bought a USB to HDMI converter cable to try to use a Vizio E320i-B1 television as a monitor for my Macbook Air. When I go to System Preferences > Displays, I hold the alt/option key and click "Detect Displays," but the TV still doesn't show up.

How can I get my Macbook to recognize the TV? Is that possible with a USB to HDMI converter?

4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 5000 1536 MB

What adapter did you buy? Look up the model, see if it's compatible with MAC. We don't know that without a model.
