I connected an old HDD to my W7 laptop, tried to format it but managed to convert it to Basic Drive. As a result my main SDD is now listed as Dynamic Drive which consist of 'Simple Volumes'.

I had not turned the laptop off yet in fear I won't be able to turn it back on.

What are the consequences of my actions?
How can I turn my main drive back to Basic drive?

My SSD consist of 3 volumes
99mb
175gb system, boot, page file, crash dump
40gb
22gb unallocated

175gb system partition has a lot of licenced software which I use for work.
40gb is designated for my private stuff.

Is it possible to back it all up so that after wiping the drive and setting back to 'basic' the partition can be recreated with all it's content restored?

I can't afford to wipe the drive clean and reinstall windows as most of the software is no longer available to me.

Now that is a good question. You might need to do some serious work to get this back to basic without wiping the drive.

It is probably time for a 3rd party utility. I have used Easeus partition manager in the past but here is a good step by step guide with another utility that does not require a drive wipe, but a full backup is a must before using any utility.
