Static discharge across pins the right spot.

They may have damaged their motherboard during the install (LGA is neat, but easy to damage) I still think AMD's old fashioned ZIF sockets are the 'proper' way.

On package capacitors and resistors could indeed get broken off, but you would have to almost pry at the CPU to get that to happen.

Circuitry can randomly fail, but CPUs are pretty much a self contained package, not much to go wrong. Should last 10 years or more. (Generally motherboards and obsolescence come first)

The next 5 or 6 years should be interesting actually. Computing progress has stagnated a little for the consumer. Smartphones put a lower requirement on just about everything for a while, and aside from 4K content...
