What would you say is the best option?

I'm looking into the 1060, but I'm not experienced enough to really determine whether or not that is a good choice for a noticeable performance upgrade.

My other specs are 16gb RAM and i5 6600K so I'm not worried about bottleneck.

Any help is appreciated

GTX 1060 would not be a huge upgrade....in fact it be fairly parallel. a GTX 780 is about as powerful as a GTX 970 which is slightly less powerful then the GTX 1060...go for a GTX 1070 or better. Or you likely won't see much performance gains past 10%.

some would argue the drivers are some of the performance upgrade. Ie. that nvidia cripples older cards in drivers to make newer ones look better. I personally don't buy it but a lot of peeps certainly do. Ultimately the choice is yours.

So would a 980 ti have a nice boost over the 780?

I'm specifically looking for more performance on GTA V, Fallout 4, and Dying Light.

To be honest, you're in a sticky situation, and it's not your fault.

Nvidia placed the 1060 at a higher pricepoint than the 60s usually are, and same with the 1070.

They've kind of forced some of their previouse 70s marketshare, (like yourself), to choose between a super expensive 1070 or a weaker 1060.

From the benchmarks online, you can expect a 22% performance increase going from a GTX 780 to a GTX 1060, which is not bad in my opinion.

Ultimately the decision is yours, but I believe that the 1060's frames per dollar is excellent for 1080p gaming and 1070 for 1440p+ and above gaming. Unless you find a real good deal on a 900s series GPU, I feel like the power efficiency and new software like Ansel and such justify the purchase of a 10 series gp104/106 like the 1070 or 1060.

it would but at that point unless you getting a great deal on the price....you would of been better off with the GTX 1070. same performance for less money (some sales excluded...or said "great deal" i mentioned for example).

Chances are I will just get whichever one of those is cheaper at the time of purchase.

However I have acknowledged that the 1060 is better in GTA V by a decent amount. And obviously has double the VRAM

(p.s. if anyone knows how to fix that weird shadow box thing on GTA V let me know)

I have thought about it, but being an NVIDIA person, and realizing how much better NVIDIA and Intel are for emulation and stuff, I try to stick to NVIDIA unless I really can't. I also really enjoy NVIDIA DSR mode
