How does ESXi host licensing with Windows server as guest work?

Hi,

So we are going to run a Host with VMware ESXi and guest will be 'x' amounts of windows server 2016. I know that WServer has changed to core-based licensing, but now I wonder how the licensing of ESXi works, will the licensing costs increase with more machines running as guests or will the licensing only depend on the host server?
We will probably go with Windows Server 2016 Data center so that we can run "unlimited" VMs, but I really can't find any information on the ESXi licenses except that you buy licenses according to how many processors you have on the server.

VMware licensing is done on a per-core or per-processor basis if I remember correctly.
