Qualitative difference between Freesync and G-sync?

I'm going to be building a new system soon, and while my coworker has brought to my attention the fact that AMD's top card is significantly cheaper than NVIDIA and should outperform it...

What about the actual solutions these enable? What I've read seems to suggest G-Sync is still the way to go, but it's hardly definitive.

AMD's top card should outperform NVIDIA's top card ? Graphics card? Or is there something I am missing here ? I am not sure about G-Sync or Free Sync solutions but I know for sure there is no AMD card on the market that can outperform anything higher than a 1070.

Just some tier websites. AMD's fastest graphic's card is sixth and it's hardly cheaper, as there are cheaper card's in the top 5.

Currently Nvidia owns the top 3 spots for fastest single gpu with the Titan X, GTX 1080 and the GTX 1070 all of which beat AMDs current fastest single gpu card the Fury X(which is faster than the recently released RX480), so I'm not sure what your friend is referring too.

From what I have seen I do think G-Sync is a bit better, but it comes at a big premium as G-Sync monitors cost quite a bit more than Freesync.
