Should I change my CPU?

I currently have a i5 4690k with a gtx 980 that I bought for gaming a year or so ago. The setup worked perfectly until I started to video edit but I don't know if the upgrade is worth the cost. The best I can do with my motherboard (ASRock z97 Extreme6) is the i7 4790k so anything better and I need to invest in a new board :(

Money is most definitely a thing to think about so I don't want to just go buy 500-700 dollars of stuff unless there is a major improvement.
I mostly record and edit in 1080p but sometimes I do 1440p

The 4790K performs basically the same as the newer i7 6700K. Depending on what kind of editing you do, it might be more GPU accelerated than CPU, so a better CPU might not help much.

What exactly are you doing, and what performs poorly?

agree with ecky - try video editing with resource monitor running in the background, then alt-tab to see what part of your computer is slowing the task down. If you are not running all 4 cores at 100%, an i7 will make no difference.... but an ssd or more memory might help.
For example, I use cyberlink video editor, but in edit mode it is a single threaded process, so would run at identical speed on an i5 or an i7

Mainly use After Effects and Premiere Pro. Sometimes rendering and encoding takes hours so if that time cuts down significantly that would be worth my money.

I actually did this before and it is running at 100%. I already have a ssd and 32GB of RAM which is the max I can do, and more than enough imo

Sticking with you current platform, buying the I7 and selling the I5 is the better way to go if your concerned about $$$. Also not that large amounts of editing will be faster with more RAM at least 16GB of the fastest your motherboard will support.

E3-1271 V3 or I7 4790K ~ $350
I5 4690K Resell ~ $150

You will notice the difference in Editing with the hyper-threading.

I found the 4790k for under 300 in microcenter so I'll give that a try. If I can sell the i5 for 150 like delaro said, this will work out great. Thanks guys!
