If i have my desktop at 1080p will i still be able to play games in 1440p?

Hi all, i've been curious about this recently whether if i had my desktop set to 1080p and in a game set to 1440p will the game be displaying at that resolution or 1080 because my desktop is set to that resolution? the reason i'm not setting my desktop resolution to 1440p is because i have a 144hz monitor and if i set it to 1440p the max refresh rate i can set it to is 100hz. That being said the whole reason i'm asking this question is because i can't really tell the difference between 1080p and 1440p. I look forward for an answer and thank you!
