How to set up dual monitors through a HDMI splitter

I have 2 monitors that i want to set up but i am having to use a HDMI and i was wondering if this was possible and if so how would I go about doing so?

I have a Nvidia GTX 970
Going through a HDMI splitter to the 2 monitors

You won't get two monitors with an HDMI splitter. You will get two copies of the same monitor. If you want your desktop to cover two monitors, you need a display port to HDMI adapter so that you use multiple ports on your graphics card.
