Dual Monitor Help

I'm going for a Dual Monitor setup..
If I buy a HDMI splitter, can I use that to feed both monitors?
(Can I have different applications on each monitor)

A typical "HDMI splitter" will send the same image to both displays. Apart from Display Port multi-stream, each display requires its own signal from the GPU/motherboard.
