Hello everyone, could you please help me out here...

My graphics card (Sapphire HD 6670 1gb DDR5) died on me last month and I need to purchase a new one. I used to play on low/medium settings. I had done this build 3 years back as it was within my budget then. Now I'm planning of buying a really good GPU. I'm aiming to play on ultra/high settings @1080p and around 60 fps.

I'm looking at the latest generation of cards (RX and GTX 10 series). I've done a little research and narrowed down to the RX470 or GTX 1060 but I'm unable to choose between the two. I know my CPU would cause a slight bottleneck as it's not the best amongst the lot. I've never overclocked, don't intend to do so and won't be upgrading my CPU anytime soon either. 1080p is the max resolution which I'll be gaming at and surely won't go above that. My max budget is ~INR 20500 ~$290. Btw, I'm from Mumbai, India and the prices here are very high compared to the US, GTX 1060 6gb and RX 480 4gb are around INR 25000 ~ $350.

MSI RX 470 4gb Gaming X ~ INR 18500 ~ $280
GTX 1060 3gb ~ INR 20000 ~ $280

Few questions:
1. Which would be the better card, GTX 1060 3gb or RX 470 4gb, from a future proofing angle too?
2. Should I look at 6gb or would 4gb suffice?
3. Are there any other cards which I can look at?

Thank you in advance for all your help.

get a used gtx 970 and call it a day, there is no "future proofing" this setup

with tweaked settings should be playable on those games

it's too weak for anything like a 1060 or rx 480, especially without overclocking
wasted money considering you will not upgrade any time soon

Thanks for the quick replies guys.. much appreciated..

So the 1060 will be an overkill I believe for my build since I wont be able to get the performance for the price I'll be paying.

The other card i was referring to was the RX 470. It's specced lower than the 1060 so do you think it should perform well on my rig ? Its priced the same as the gtx 970. Which one do you suggest I go for ?

if its the same price go for the 1060, just be aware you will not see benchmark numbers from it because of your current setup

still a big upgrade though

I've done several installations with the rx480 in the last few months. Two with a quad core AMD CPU. You have six core CPU. Amazing performance upgrades. Either the rx480 or the gtx1060 will play 1080p 60hz at max game setting with no problems.

If you don't have the money and can find a cheap gtx970 go with it, as maxalge suggested.

The 480 is way too costly so I'm not looking at that...

How about the RX 470 ? It is priced same as the GTX 970 in my area. I know the FX 6300 bottlenecks the GTX 970 big time. So I'm not sure if it would bottleneck the RX 470 either ? I'm leaning towards the RX 470 because its the latest gen.
Any suggestions ?

The 3GB 1060 is usually priced closely to the 470. It would be a much better choice. The 470 is a decent card. Your cpu will bottleneck all of them to an extent, but you would still have god performance overall with any of them too.

Sounds like price is critical and you want the latest generation of cards. Go with either a rx470 or 1060 3gb, whichever costs less in your area.

Gop with the best priced one mate honestly .Its already been said - the stock 6300 will be the limiter here so you are essentially going to get the same performance from either card.
Id argue the 470 is slightly better future proofed with the extra 1gb vram but the 1060 draws much less power.
Your vs550 will manage either card though easily.

youve already mentioned the model of 470 - the msi gaming is one of the best coolers around , what actual model is the 1060?? Id base my final decision on that myself.

Thanks for the suggestion guys.. I checked out the prices of few cards from the prev and current gen in my area today..

GTX 960 4gb ~ INR 17000 ~ $243
R9 380 4gb ~ INR 21000 ~ $300

Sapphire RX 470 4gb ~ INR 16500 ~ $236
MSI Gaming x RX 470 4gb ~ INR 18500 ~ $265

MSI Gaming x GTX 1060 3gb ~ INR 21500 ~ $308
ZOTAC Mini GTX 1060 3gb ~ INR 18000 ~ $257

They still haven't reduced the prices of the older gen cards !!!

Looking at these prices I think it makes sense for me to go with the MSI Gaming X RX 470. I'm not too keen on the Sapphire one cause few reviews mentioned it gets heated easily due to the single blower fan.

I know my CPU would cause a bottleneck on the RX 470 but if you could please let me know how much of a bottleneck that would be, in terms of FPS/settings? Like roughly how many FPS can I expect at ultra/very high settings @1080p?

Thank you as always guys.

I think its a sensible decision personally, the 1060 3gb is more powerful a card but with your cpu its not going to perform any differently to a 470.

Youre trading a bit more theoretical performance for a lot better cooling & build quality here & I think thats the better option personally.

fps in games - too many variables mate, between 40-60 depending on title - mostly at ultra settings.
Cant really theorise any more than that.
A happy medium is setting your desktop to 50htz instead of 60 & just playing everything at 50fps.
Thats what I do personally
Keeps the card quieter & cooler too.
