Internal sound card to external audio adapter via optical?

I just bought a Focusrite 6i6 Scarlett external USB audio adapter to replace my Omega Claro II sound card. I want some external input options for pro mics. But I noticed that both devices have optical input/outputs. Would there be any benefit sound-wise, to reduce latency or CPU load-wise to connect the two via optical spdif or would I be better off just connecting the Focusrite directly to computer via USB2 and pulling the card? This would be for video and audio editing. Thanks for any help.

Optical connection would not have possibility of electrical interference.
