As tittle describes I'm looking for a good value 1440p monitor to move into 1440p gaming with my R9 390. I've heard many times that 27" is the sweet spot for a 1440p monitor and as such I'm mostly interested in monitor's of that size but would consider other options.

Any opinion's and advise all greatly recieved, I've done a little research into the option's already but would value the thought's of Tom's Hardware tech guru's highly.

Solution
1440p 27" is indeed a good upgrade from 1080p.
1440p on anything smaller than 27" is not exactly optimal.
There are several good all-rounder (60Hz) monitors on around £400 zone such as Dell U2715H and ASUS PB278QR.
If you can push the budget a bit and if you game a lot, please consider ASUS MG279Q. This is a FreeSync 1440p 144Hz 27" IPS monitor.
If you are interested about my setup, I am running an Acer XB270HU and ASUS PB278QR. (hover your mouse over my avatar for details)

Note: R9 390 will struggle a bit in some games on 1440p and you will have to lower down the settings. Unfortunately there is none from AMD on GTX1070 performance class at the moment. Going for RX480 is not exactly a big upgrade from R9 390.

I've just made the move to 1440p and have gone for this https://www.amazon.co.uk/AOC-Monitor-Display-Speakers-Q2577PWQ/dp/B00WK39NXK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1475582688&sr=8-1&keywords=aoc+1440p+monitor. Its only 25" rather than 27" but is certainly big enough for my needs plus at 25" you get a higher DPI so curved images will appear much smoother reducing the need for AA etc. Its only a 60Hz pannel but is very good value for 1440p monitors IMO.

If that's not to your taste tell us your budget and what specs you want your monitor to have and we can help you further :)

The Asus PB278QR was one of the monitor's I was potentially interested in, that's roughly the kind of price range I'm going for.

So budget £400 roughly If it means stretching to a vastly superior monitor

I recently bought a Acer XG270HU and R9 390. A combo I am very pleased with. The FreeSync is working perfectly, and its got a awesome refreshrate. Even though the panel is only a TN, I also think the colourreproduction is pretty good.

Thank you for your reply, am I doing the right thing upgrading to 1440p? What do you think? I did look into 1920p 144 hz monitor's but a bit of research showed me how aweful the colour looks on TN panels and put me off.

Going for 1440p? if you already on 1440p, you will never want to go back to 1080p.

There is unfortunately no 144Hz IPS panel for 1080p, you can find such stuffs only for 1440p.
There are several 144Hz 1440p IPS monitors like XB270HU, XB271HU, MG279Q and PG279Q.
Only the MG279Q in the list is working with FreeSync, the rest works using GSync.
