Hi Everybody,

tl;dr:
I am looking for the driver for a HP Laserjet 6p on Windows 10.

Detail:
It is possible to install the driver with Windows options, but not with Windows Update. Installing this driver with Windows options is still very annoying and takes about two hours.
The problem is, that it stops working after a few weeks and I cannot use two hours every time I want to print something. If I had the driver file, I could just run it and be done.

I know that there are a lot of questions concerning this printer, but I couldn't find a download for the driver. Also maybe some questions would be solved, if there was a download for it here in the forum.

If neccessary I can be more specific on some aspects, but writing all my experiences with this printer in the first post would take about two A4 pages and I figured no one wants to read that,

yours sincerely
Fabian

You need to use Internet explorer to use the Microsoft Update catalog, it works from win 10 as I have used it myself to get an update. IE is in win 10, its just not obvious unless you search for it.

According to this the latest driver for this printer is Win 7. That would go some way towards your problems.

you can try the win 7 drivers but they may just repeat the errors you having

The reason you cannot find win 10 drivers here is there aren't any. Its hard to link them if the hardware maker isn't releasing drivers for it anymore. They didn't have win 8.1 drivers either so it seems support ended years ago. You probably best get a new printer and then it will have drivers for a few more years to come. Just make sure it supports win 10 before getting it, lots of old printers around still being sold as new.

I found that list and couldn't find printer on it. I tried ctrl f 6p, it just opens a box in chrome that doesn't do anything

is this your printer? HP 6p - shame link just goes back to same page as above.

Seems the drivers should be built into Win 10 already, they should show if you go to add a printer. I can't really help, driver sites say they have version 8.5 but when I search it, it comes back as win 7 so not sure i trust it.

When the box opens click on it. Type in 6p. Press enter. It will show the list entry of the Laserjet 6p and a checkmark in the Windows 10 column.

Unfortunately yes, the suggested windows websites always tell me, that I need another browser or OS or both. Messed around with user agend string, but I couldn't make it work.

Nice! It worked. So apperently I had to install something, when on Microsoft Update-Catalog.
Yesterday I overlooked that, so it told me to get Internet Explorer although I already used it.

Now I have one last problem. When I downloaded the driver I got a 'cabinet file' but I don't really know how to use that. There is no .exe or .bat in it. What do I have to do, when I need it?

Hi Colif,
so I needed the driver now, but your way of executing the .cab file didn't work for me. this is my input and the error message:

C:\WINDOWS\system32>dism/online/add-package/packagepath:"C:\<path>\treiber.cab"

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 10.0.14393.0

Error: 87

The online/add-package/packagepath option is unknown.
For more information, refer to the help by running DISM.exe /?.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\WINDOWS\Logs\DISM\dism.log

kind regards

I should have said copy/paste the command in as the spacing needs to be exact. I have seen error 87 before so I knew what it meant

dism /online /add-package /packagepath:"C:\update\cabname.cab"

the space before the / in front of each word is needed, otherwise windows thinks its all one command and gets confused.

it shouldn't be this hard to install a driver...

could try downloading another copy of the file. Wonder if it would help if you weren't attached to internet when you ran it as the last error is a windows update error.

Are you on latest version of win 10?
right click start button
choose run...
type winver and press enter
are you on build 1607?

if you aren't, Go here and click upgrade now. It should download the upgrade assistant. If you run it, it will update you to latest build.

I suspect you are on 1607 by now. Its been out 3 months.

you might want to try this:
Download a copy of the win 10 iso from Here - create ISO by telling it you want to make DVD - and then mount that ISO in file explorer (see Here) and then copy paste the below command into command prompt (admin)

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /source:WIM:X:\Sources\Install.wim:1 /LimitAccess
Where "X" is the drive letter where the ISO is located. Simply change the "X" to the correct drive letter

its getting to point might be easier to reinstall win 10. But if this is only problem you have, it would be a pain, especially with no guaranteed success.
