Hi I currently have MG279q (1440p, 144hz, IPS, Freesync range 60-144hz). It is an amazing monitor with great colors however my r9 390 have a hard time doing max settings at 1440p. I'm wondering what you guys opinion if I should return it for a MG248q (1080p, 144hz, TN, Freesync range 40-144hz)

1440p does make things more clear but I don't know if its worth 60 percent of all performances.

(I've run numerous tests on, 1080p always runs 160-162 percent faster in terms of frames than 1440p in games)

MG279q (the one i currently have)

I wouldn't recommend downgrading for 1080p since you have already invested in 1440p and might actually regret it after some time when you want a higher resolution.

just turn down some settings or even play at 1080p on that screen in the meantime while you wait for a new card of generation of cards.

MG248q is the updated version of Vg248q with a new TN panel and freesync

I'm keeping the r9 390 or get fury x right now (its 350 dollars atm in new egg and 370 dollars at the micro center near me) or wait for vega

Yeah vega was my original plan. Issue is i don't want to update all the time. Again 1080p runs 160 percent~ faster in frames compared to 1440p in games. So if I do stick with 1440p, I'l have to upgrade a lot more often...

Depends if it's hurting your gaming enjoyment and that's a personal thing. At 1440P you can dial back AA settings a bit to regain some performance over 1080P because the smaller pixels are less obvious to begin with. Personally as long as it's hitting smooth playable framerates I'd be inclined to stick with it.

But then I'm perfectly happy gaming @ 1080P 60hz with Vsync on my GTX980 which I'm sure will horrify some of you. I love that for the last 2 years I've been able to play absolutely everything cranked to max. I'm waiting for better performance at higher res before I upgrade my monitor myself.

As Elbert mentions resolution tends to climb over time, not that many years ago gaming at 1080 pushed high end graphics hardware beyond it's limits and now it's fine on mid range cards. the same is likely to happen to QHD and 4K over the next few years. Ask yourself how long will you keep the monitor and will you regret getting rid of it in the next few years if 1440 becomes mid range.
