1440p 60hz vs 1080p 144hz

Guys, i need help choosing between better resolution or better refresh rate. I mostly play games like GTA V, Assassin's Creed, Call Of Duty, League of Legends, Rocket League & some fps games like CSGO, TF2. Please help me choose.

My Specs:-
i7-6700k
Asus Maximus Viii Hero Alpha
Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3000mhz
Corsair H115i
MSI Seahawk X GTX 1080
WD Black 2TB
Samsung 850 EVO 250GB
EVGA G2 850w

1440p/144Hz definitely makes more sense in your case, if money is the problem then 1440p/60Hz will still provide a great experience and sharper images.

GTX1080 is defintely overkill for 1080p at any refresh rate.

Well this comes down to personal prefrence, honestly with your system 1440p 144hz would be ideal. Out of the two I would definitely go for the 1080p 144hz panel, personally I see more benefit in be able to run at and see 144fps framerates (which your system will do in some of those games) than seeing more pixels at 1440p 60fps.
 
What monitor do you have now?
You games are fast action types where a good frame rate and response time is important.
For that reason, you might want to opt for a faster tn panel that has G.sync or freesync, depending on your graphics card.

OTOH, if the current fps is fine and you want better visuals then a 1440P IPS based monitor might be better.

Regardless, keep your old monitor as a side monitor attached to your graphics card. The relatively static image of email or performance monitore will not impact gaming at all.
