120hz over HDMI?

Currently I'm living away from home gaming on a laptop and I've been wanting to buy a 120hz monitor to use. The only available port to connect an external display is HDMI so DVI or DisplayPort aren't an option. The GPU in the laptop is a GTX 960M so I believe the HDMI version must be 1.4 or 2.0, meaning 120hz should be possible. If I order a 120hz monitor (was thinking of the BenQ XL2411Z which lists the vertical frequency using HDMI as 120) will it be possible to achieve 120hz? I don't particularly mind having to go down in resolution a bit if it means getting the higher frame rate. I've heard success stories of people accomplishing 120hz at 1440x900 and then others saying there's no way it's possible. Thanks in advance for any info.

In short, unless it's HDMI 2.0 (with a 960M, it's 1.4) then you can't achieve 120Hz .
