Hello,
So i'd like to ask if it's dangerous for my cpu to be at around 80-90'C, while running prime95 to stress it. I overclocked it a little with the preset overclock value. In case anybody wondered my cpu cooler is macho rev.b.

Arcad3,

On behalf of Tom's, welcome aboard!

Do NOT run any versions of Prime95 later than 26.6. Here's why:

Core i 2nd through 6th Generation CPU's have AVX (Advanced Vector Extension) instruction sets. Recent versions of Prime95, such as 28.9, run AVX code on the Floating Point Unit (FPU) math coprocessor, which produces unrealistically high temperatures. The FPU test in the utility AIDA64 shows similar results.

Prime95 v26.6 produces temperatures on 3rd through 6th Generation processors more consistent with 2nd Generation, which also have AVX instructions, but do not suffer from thermal extremes due to having a soldered Integrated Heat Spreader and a significantly larger Die.

Please download Prime95 version 26.6 - http://windows-downloads-center.blogspot.com/2011/04/prime95-266.html

Run only Small FFT’s for 10 minutes.

Use Core Temp to measure your temperatures - http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp

Your Core temperatures will test 10 to 20C lower with v26.6 than with v28.9.

Please read this Tom’s Sticky: Intel Temperature Guide - http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-1800828/intel-temperature-guide.html

well prime 95 and haswell make some crazy temps. what are temps in most applications? chances are that it will never get anywhere near as hot under regular loads. also be wary of preset overclocks, while they work, they often apply more voltage than needed to make sure that any CPU will be stable with the board, and thus temps are higher than they should be. see if you cannot lower the core voltage slightly simply drop it by around .05 see if it still passes stress tests, if it does try dropping it more. excess voltage does nothing but drive up temps which in the very long run can lead to CPU degradation.

^^^^ would up vote if I could.

Thanks a lot for letting me know, the temperatures shown are now around 60-70'C. Also thanks for linking the temperature guide, I will have a read through it.

One more thing... I've looked at different forums and people were saying to stress overclocked cpus for 3-8 hours or even more. Why? What should I do it with if not prime95?

Your question has already been anticipated and answered in the Intel Temperature Guide under Section 13 - Thermal Testing @ 100% Workload.

It's always best to read first, then if you still have unanswered questions, ask later after reading.

Prime95 is perfect for a 10 minute thermal test, but not for stability testing. Use Asus RealBench for stability testing:
