Connecting Laptop to an Acer P221W Monitor

I am trying to connect a Lenovo Flex 3-11laptop to an Acer P221W monitor using a DVI to HDMI cable. Windows 10 is unable to detect the monitor and I seem to have exhausted my options there. The monitor was previously connected to a desktop via VGA but all these cables have been removed. Apart from possibly a faulty cable (its new) what else could it be. Could it simple be some compatibility issue as the monitor is a bit old.

usually on a laptop you either go in the bios and tell it to out put to external display

or you use fn + another key to toggle between internal/external/both displays

The answer I get is "Monitor cannot be detected" if I force it to use the 2nd monitor all sceens are blanked and I have to do a forced reboot.

I found the answer no driver is available the last update was 2008 for Vista only.
