Hey guys, I just built a new computer and ran a benchmark test for a MSI GTX 1080 8gb GPU on default settings via 3DMark. I noticed in the logs that it was only using about 3 gb of memory out of its 8 gb. Is this normal? Also the Core Clock speed went up to 1936 MHz but its set to its default at 1657 MHz Base. I'm pretty new at when it comes to GPUs so any information would be appreciated!

Setup:

Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor
NZXT Kraken X61 106.1 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
MSI Z170A GAMING M7 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4-3200 Memory
MSI GeForce GTX 1080 8GB Video Card
EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply

I can also post the GPU-Z benchmark log if needed. Thanks!

3DMark benchmarks don't use as much VRAM, so that looks normal. The 1936mhz is your boost speed and will vary depending on voltage, heat, load, etc. My Gigabyte 1080 fluctuates between 1925 and 1890 under load.

You'll learn that both CPUs and GPUs rarely run at their advertised clock speeds. They usually run higher under load, or much lower when idle. If you are on windows 10, open your task manager/resource monitor and watch what your CPU frequency is doing while idle and under load.
