Do I need a 144hz Monitor if I'm not planning to game that much?

Hey guys, I'm building a PC here and I am looking at two 1440p monitors, one that is 60hz and the other being 144 hz. It's a $300 difference so I was wondering if I should take the 60hz instead of 144hz because I do not plan on gaming much. I am planning on buying the NVIDIA 1080 (yes I know what a waste but I still will game a little and edit videos and try to use it as much to its potential as I can) Sorry I know this is confusing so please ask as many questions as you can about this!

Solution
A 1070 would be able to handle 1440p with high - ultra settings @ 60 FPS minimum in most current titles, and the 1080 of course would be higher...

Lets say you stick with the GTX 1080, and get the 60Hz 1440p monitor. Now you have $300 left over from not getting the 144Hz monitor.

As far as the rest of your build at that point:

If you're planning to do video editing occasionally, stick with the i7 6700k and 1080. Use the $300 saved from the monitor to get a large SSD or HDDs

Otherwise:

If you're focusing on video editing / rendering, with occasional gaming, i'd use the $300 to swap out that i7 6700k for an X99 board and i7 6800k, with the GTX 1080. That way you get two more cores that would benefit video editing, while keeping the...

144Hz is a luxury and nowhere near necessary. I prefer 60Hz monitors because you can crank the settings since hardware requirement is so much lower compared to 144hz monitors. If it were up to me i would get the 60hz.

Well would the 1070 still support the 1440p monitor on high settings in games well? And im planning on getting an i7 6700k 4.0 Ghz

The 970 could almost handle 1440p. You don't need to have the best of the best to play @ 1440p. The 1070 would definitely be able to keep up.

You would get the same fps. However the screen wouldn't refresh as fast so you wouldn't see the fps. There's really no different from 144 hz or 60 hz is just cheaper. Get a 60 hz and save money.

I think the GTX1080 might be overkill. Remember that 1440P will downscale to 1080P easily so if you don't have enough juice you can fall back. With that being said you might be able to save some money with a GTX 1060.

I think the important thing is for you to understand what what the different monitor panels will over you.

With dual monitors it might be advantageous to get IPS monitors as they have better colors and wider viewing angles.

Most 144MHz monitors are TN panels which while having faster refresh rates tend not to be as colorful and have more narrow viewing angles.

Here is a video explaining the differences.
