Upgrading a R9 270 worth it?

Hey guys!

Recently my R9 270 (not the X version) GPU broke down and I had to send it for warranty repairs, so I will hopefully get it back.
However, I can't work without a GPU so in the meantime I am considering buying a new GPU and then probably sell one of the GPUs (probably the old one).

I looked at the possibilities within my price range and I'm now choosing between
MSI GTX 1050 Ti GAMING X 4G for ~ 200$ (185€)
and
GIGABYTE RX460 WINDFORCE OC 4G for ~ 150$ (140€).

At the moment, I have the MSI R9 270 (not the X version) and so far I have been really satisfied with it, wouldn't want to change it at all if it didn't break down. SO what I am asking is :

1) if I upgrade to one of these cards (or other if You recommend some), is it a significant upgrade to the R9 270? Or do I just spend 200$ for pretty much the same performance?
2) Is the 1050 Ti 4GB much better than the RX460, given the 50$ difference? If it was, I would probably spend the extra buck for a much better and more long-term solution.

If it wasn't worth it, I would probably just wait for the R9 270 to get back repaired.

The PC is mostly used for gaming (e.g. Witcher 3). And the rest of my system is here: https://www.alfa.cz/basket.php?items=_2N1G012GK9012H38012LEP01

EDIT: I am also starting to consider getting an even more expensive card, maybe the RX480- would it be worth it and wouldn't the rest of my PC be a bottleneck for it?

Thanks a LOT!

George

Those prices are really high. Where are u located at?. I see tons of 1050/1050ti for the 110-140 range. If ur spending 200$ you should be able to get a 3gb 1060 or 4gb 470/480. I actually had a 3gb gigabyte 1060 in my cart last night for 180$. Trying to decide if I want gigabyte or not.

The 1050 / 460 isnt enough of an upgrade. From what I've seen its about equal to a 380x, which is still not strong enough to run modern aaa titles at 1080p on high settings 60fps... The 470/480/1060 will all run the highest of games maxes out @1080p between 90-100fps and 60-70@1440p. The most extreme games will still get 55-70fps on ultra 1080p.

I currently have a 270x which is almost identical performance to the 270. I think if you get anything other than 1060/470/480 you will be let down. Some newer games had some nice benchmarks but its a minimal upgrade especially considering if u wait there should be higher models for the same price

a 270 is just about the high end of the 750ti for performance. the 1050ti is a strong upgrade over the 750ti. hence, it is also a worthy upgrade over the 270.

but i agree that 200 sounds a bit high for the card but then again i also know once you leave the US prices and availability are much different.

but in the end a 1050ti would be a useful upgrade over a 270. it is roughly a gtx 960 in performance. so you can also look at those older cards to see if there might be a better price there for you.

Yea I know, it sucks! :) Im in the Czech Republic (central europe) and our central bank is currently intervening against our currency, the Czech crown! :( keeping it at certain level to fight off deflation, so it affects the final prices on our market - increasing prices of import :( Also I think the GPUs are more expensive in general here.

That's why the card - https://www.alza.cz/msi-gtx-1050-ti-gaming-x-4g-d4529148.htm?o=15#recenze at 5000CZK is 200$ - with the exchange rate of 25CZK/1USD.

The GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1060 WINDFORCE OC 3G is ~260 $ USD and I don't think I wanna spend that much.

And the GIGABYTE GTX 960 WINDFORCE 2X OC Gaming 2GB You recommended, Math Geek, is 200$ as well :( the 4 Gb version is 260$.

Damn, so u guys have completely different opinions, so I'm back to square 1 :D
So maybe I'll rephrase the question based on Your comments:
I think the 260bucks for the 1060/470/480 is way too expensive for me, so I won't go for that, really seems a lot to me (I do have the money just don't wanna spend that much).

So should I:
A) Wait for my R9 270 to get repaired and stay with it.
B) Buy the RX460 4Gb https://www.alza.cz/gigabyte-rx460-windforce-oc-4g-d4423470.htm#recenze - 150$.
C) Buy the 1050 2Gb https://www.alza.cz/gigabyte-geforce-gtx-1050-windforce-oc-2g-d4564636.htm?catid=18842862 - 160$.
D) Buy the 1050 4Gb https://www.alza.cz/msi-gtx-1050-ti-gaming-x-4g-d4529148.htm?o=15#recenze - 200$.

My mindset is like this:
If none of these cards would mean significant increase in performance, I would like to stay with the R9 270 - wait for repairs with 0 investment.
If the RX460 meant a significant increase over the R9 270 and would serve me for some years, I would go for that for the 150$ and maybe sell the R9 270 later (or could I use them both at the same time for better performance...?)
And if the MSI 1050 4GB still meant a significant increase over the RX460, I would pay the extra 50$ for that, but the 200$ seem like the MAX I would like to spend.

I know I'm a nuisance, but I would really appreciate Your help ! :)

Thanks a lot.
George

the prices where you live are crazy expensive. I wonder if you would make out better by buying off of ebay and having it shipped to you? many sellers who sell items new on ebay, i'm not sure if this is better when considering shipping and all. Perhaps if you have a friend you trust in another country in Europe or even the u.s where prices are way less. You could give them money and they mail it to you.

Outside of that I think you would be better to just wait and eventually the price should drop. It's too much to pay for what is a minimal upgrade for you. You won't gain much at all for 200$. A 1050ti would have to cost you under 125$ for it to be worth spending the money to upgrade from a 270, it's just not enough of an overall upgrade.

A 270 is about equal to a gtx 950. The 1050ti is about 15-30% better performance than a 950. It's hard to find direct benchmarks of a 270 w/ a 1050ti, but if you look up the 270 vs 950 performance is basically the same. Then it's easy to compare a 950 to a 1050ti which is how I got these numbers.

So basically your moving from 45fps in a game to 54fps, which could be the difference between feeling like 60fps and obviously not feeling like 60fps. The largest increase I saw was gears of war 4 at 40fps up to 60fps on a 1050ti. Check this comparison.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcB0HUnQxOM

Your probably paying the same for this as you did for your 270 for an average of 15% increase.. Just as a point of reference, I have a 270x I paid like 215$ 2 1/2 years ago. Upgrading to either the 1060 / 480 which will typically gain 100% increase in most games for equal or less than what I paid for the 270x. I guess you have to decide what it's worth to you. Personally I would wait.

Hi! Many thanks for Your answer!

The shipping would be a lot, erasing the 50$ difference.

You compared the R9 270 with the Geforce graphics, but how does it fare compared to the RX460? Is it like the others here have said, that it is pretty much the same? :(

And one more question - if in the end they refuse to repair my R9 270, which of these should I get? the 1050 ti?

And 2) could I run the 1050 ti and R9 270 in one PC if they repaired it and I didn't wanna sell it underpriced?

Thanks! :)

R9 270 & rx460 are honestly on a par with each other.

& no its pointless running 2 different cards even if you would ,there would be nothing to gain at all.

On the off chance they can't repair vthe card or replace with the same model they'll likely give you a 460 anyway as its the modern day equivalent.

WOW really on par? So I won't get the RX460 then and if they reject repairs of the R9 270, I will get the 1050 Ti MSI then for the 200$ USD I guess.

Ah so I would need 2 IDENTICAL cards for them to work together? thanks for the info!! :)

Theyre different architectures so performance can be vastly different on the minimal odd occasion.

doom 3 the rx 460 pulls around 15% more fps for some reason (the newer id engine just favours the newer architecture better especially in dx12 mode)
Gta 5/BF games/Just cause +a lot of other titles the 270x actually beats the 460 by 3-5fps constantly.
The 270 is only 5% stronger than the 270 so do the math & it would overall be like for like (apart from the 460's much better efficiency & lower power draw)

Hey guys, just to give u an update, in the end i Will Wait for the rma of 270 and keep using it afterwards if the rma goes fine. And then just buy a new gpu once this grts obsolete. So far its enough for witcher 3 etc. Thanks a lot!!!

maybe consider whatever is equal to the 470/480 at the time when your ready. if you can wait longer, maybe you could get a stronger upgrade that will last longer..
