Almost all desktop icons disappeared

I restarted my computer after it started lagging and all the desktop icons except 2 images I recently saved from the internet are gone. When I go to This PC > Desktop, everything is there. I have an anti-virus installed and I don't have another monitor attached. My desktop icons in View are turned on.

in task manager scroll down to windows processes

right click windows explorer and choose restart

if that doesnt work rebuild the icon cache though thats a bit more complicated
