Already own a R9 390, want better fps gaming 1440 and high VR capabilities. Add a 2nd R9 and crossfire or move to a 1070/1080

I bought a Asus Strix R9 390 w 8gb Vram in jan 16. I've been happy with it so far. I'm looking to build up to a VR heavy machine as well as 1440p gaming w high fps. Would I be better off hoping right to a 1070 or 1080 gpu and just selling my r9, or is there some sense and value in getting another Asus R9 and crossfiring it? As for the rest of my setup, i5 6600k, ssd, 16gb ddr4 2300 ram. Thanx in advance for your opinions.

Well for VR purposes, multiple GPUs isn't solidified - it introduces unplayable latency. They are working on having each GPU render one eye each, but it isn't there yet. So Crossfire for VR is essentially a non option.

GTX 1080 is your best bet. a GTX 1070 would probably be fine too, and performs much better than a single R9 390.

Dual r9 390s would be a heat generating power thirty rig, as much as i liked my 390 while i had it, the thing was so damn warm.
