My newly built computer starts but my monitor says "no signal" and proceeds to go into standby mode.

Specs:
MSI Z170A gaming M5 motherboard
Corsair CX170M PSU
Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 GPU
Intel inside core i7 6700k 4.0GHz CPU
Corsair Vengeance 2x8GB RAM

When card installed, the onboard is automatically disabled.
You can run the pc without a graphics card, until solving the adapter/cable issue, or you can enable in BIOS the IGD Multi-Monitor and run the monitor from the motherboard.
What ports available on the monitor?

You'll be able to use the onboard, when graphics card installed. However, you'd get no advantage from the card, since not using it. It's like not installing it at all.
For using the card, I suggest a HDMI cable, if HDMI port available on the graphics card.
