does displayport 1.2 work with 1.4?

Sorry guys i know its a super noob question but display port 1.2 connections on a dell gaming monitor work with a gigabyte gtx 1080 with 1.4 display port? I've never used displayport connections before. Will I still be able to get a full 144hz at 1ms?

Yes, it's fully backwards compatible.

DP is the highest bandwidth and most versatile interface. 144hz (assuming 1080P or 1440P) will run over DP 1.2 just fine.
