DVI-D to VGA Display problem

So I bought a new rig, however my monitor had a VGA output but my graphics card only accepted DVI. There was no display. Anyways I then bought an active DVI-D to VGA converter and it works but the screen keeps flashing black every few seconds almost as if it's running low on power or something. What do I do?

If the converter is not fully engaged, you will get odd behavior.

Honestly, get a new monitor

Many of those need external power, usually come with a usb cable to supply that power.
