What to Look for in a Graphics Monitor?

I'm looking to buy a monitor, but I have no idea what I should look for in a one. I'm not looking for anything crazy fancy, just something to depict colours accurately, really. My 8 year old laptop monitor is honestly good enough for me, with a 16 inch, 24-bit ,16.7 million colour display. So anything that or better would be great. I would like to stay below $300, but will definitely consider something higher if recommended.

Uses: Digital painting, animation, video and photo editing, and very mild gaming
CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K
Graphics Card: MSI GTX 970
Budget: $300

Would serve you well and be below $300.

That said a 970 could easily run a 2k screen, and you could get a 2k 27in for about $300.

I had never heard of BenQ before yesterday. Are they good quality from your experience?
