Is it normal for a WD Hard disk to make click noise on connecting with the system?

Hi,

I have a 2TB Western Digital hard disk. Sometimes i power on my laptop with the hard disk connected, and i hear a clicking sound (just once). Is this normal?

I've attached the HDDscan S.M.A.R.T report, please have a look.

I'm not sure what the two errors (197 & 198) really mean.

Can i do something about it?

Hi there Abid1,

Sorry that you are facing some issues with your WD drive. :(

My suggestion would be to back up the data stored on the drive.

I would agree with CountMike. If the drive makes just a single clicking sound when unparking the head, it could be fine. Yet, you can attach the drive with a different USB cable to another USB port and see if that would make any difference.

Is the drive under warranty?

When it comes to pending sectors, sometimes the writing zeros process could help. This would fill in 0 value in each sector. You can do that with WD's Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=6bTHFm
Keep in mind that you need to back up all the data stored on the drive as this is a data destructive process.

You can run both short and extended DLG tests on the drive after that.

Cheers,
D_Know_WD :)
