I'm starting a new build soon, and I just have a few questions about what is needed and what isn't. I have most of the parts picked out, and I'm looking to keep the components all sub-$2000. Here's what I have on my list so far:
CPU: Intel i7 6700k
Motherboard: Z170X Gaming 7
GPU: GTX 1080
Memory: Dominator Platinum 16GB 4x4 3000MHz DDR4
SSD: Samsung 850 Pro 512GB
HDD: WD 2TB
PSU: HX860i
Cooling: H100i V2
This is all going to be used to power a 4k gaming build, with three monitors. The main monitor will be the only 4k monitor. The other two will be small, 1080p monitors for multitasking.
Questions: First, is there anywhere I could/should go cheaper? Is the PSU overkill or necessary?
Also, should I look at PCI-E or M.2 SSDs? They're incredibly fast, but I'm not sure if I'll need to spend the extra money for a gaming build.
Finally, can this build support 4k? Yes, I know the 1080 is a great card for 4k, and I thought about getting two 1070s in SLI, but I worry about what the future of SLI holds for gaming. What I'm worried about is if the 1080 by itself will be able to support 1 4k monitor and 2 1080p monitors while keeping a decent FPS on the 4k game (the game wouldn't have to have max settings or the best anti-aliasing available).
Thanks for any help on the matter! Happy Holidays!
