I just replaced my old i3 with a new i7, and my pc seems to be working but i'm not completely sure... When i started my pc after the installation it suddenly shut down during booting, and there was a crack noise. It restarted itself did that another time, and at the 3rd time my bios informed me that i had installed a new cpu and i needed to change settings. So i checked that all the settings were good, and restarted. Windows loaded without problems and it worked for a couple of seconds before a blue screen came up. After that it restarted and everything worked normally. I'm still not entirely sure though...
Pc part list:
CPU: Intel Core i7 4790K @ 4.00GHz(lga 1150)
RAM: 8,00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 815MHz

@paulNZ I have a bios of version 2.16.1240 by American Megatrends. Also a new development, i'm constantly hearing a small thumping noise, sounds like the HDD, but can't be sure.
