My monitor is only vga compatible. I'm getting a GTX 1060 which has dvi-d dual link inputs. I bought a vga to dvi-i adapter a long time ago, will it fit in the dvi-d slot in the graphics card and work?

DVI-D is the digital-only form of DVI outputs. DVI-I has extra pins, and can transmit an analog signal giving it native support for VGA assuming one has the adapter. If you need to use a DVI-D output for an analog (VGA) device (older TV/CRT monitor/etc.) then you will most likely require a powered adapter of some kind which will process the digital output into something analog.
