I have 2 monitors. 1 is a HDMI connection the other is VGA. So I have an VGA to HDMI adapter, but is it best to connect the VGA one to my motherboard and the HDMI one to the GTX 1050ti?

Solution
No, that won't work because motherboard's GPU is automatically disabled when a PCI/PCIe GPU is detected (to avoid resource & driver conflicts)..

You must therefore connect both monitors to your GTX card.

The only exception is if motherboard BIOS supports simultaneous iGPU + GPU operation, you can check in BIOS config utility.
