I have a 144Hz monitor and I bought an HDMI-DVI Adapter and my monitor won't go to 144Hz!

I don't know why, even when I bought a $35 HDMI to DVI adapter, my monitor still refuses to go to 144Hz. I don't know why and it's making me very upset, as I bought this monitor just for the 144Hz.

HDMI to DVI adapters won't support that refresh rate. You must have an HDMI to HDMI connection to have at least 120hz. DVI and VGA don't support 144hz. In order to achieve 144hz, you must have a display port to display port connection.

I understand you are an expert, but all the other stuff I read was saying you needed DVI to go up to 144Hz. Also I'm using an HP laptop.

1. Are you using an HDMI cable that is version 1.3 or higher?
2. What GPU are you using? Does it support HDMI 1.3 or higher.

Of course, the best solution is to use displayport if you can.

To my knowledge, if it is DVI-D, then yes. You must have a DVI-D to DVI-D connection to the monitor. Adapters such as DVI to HDMI will limit the bandwidth on the cable, prohibiting the 144hz functionality. Also HDMI 1.4 does support 120hz at 1080p, but Display port and DVI-D support 144hz.

How do I know which version of HDMI the cable is?

Also the cable and the computer are dvi-d. My monitor is dual link, but I'm not sure if the cable is.

Edit: Looked at the box and it supports dual link and many other types of dvi. Does that mean they are both DVI-D dual link?

I'm confused. If your laptop has dual link DVI and your monitor has dual link dvi, why don't you just take back the hdmi to dvi adaptor and get a dual link dvi cable? Why are you messing around with HDMI cables in this case?

If your DVI cables look something like this https://www.amazon.com/C2G-DVI-D-Dual-Link-Cable/dp/B0000X0VCY then you have DVI-D duel link. I should of mentioned that it has to be duel link to provide the 144hz, not single link. So even if the adapter supports dual link, doesn't mean it will work like one, right?

Well, it looks like your laptop does not have a DVI-D duel link port, and I highly doubt that this computer has the processing power to display 144hz, let alone 120hz. Your best bet to just use an HDMI to HDMI connection to display 60hz, until you buy either a desktop, or another computer with the power to display 144hz.

Dude - this laptop just has intel integrated graphics. I don't think it's going to support 144hz refresh rates. You need a gaming laptop that has a dedicated GPU or a desktop system with mid to higher end GPU.
