I am trying to extend my desktop to a second monitor. Yes, I know how it is supposed to work with the display settings, but I can not get the operating system to recognize the existence of two monitors. Let me first explain some details because my situation is not like the others. First of all, it was working and suddenly it stopped. Also, according to the Windows 10 OS, my drivers are all updated.

I am also able to reboot and have the system work with either monitor and looked into either port on the video card.

Please advise. I downloaded display fusion, but I do not think it will help since I assume the software is dependent on existing system settings.

Could you please pass on your full system's specs as:
CPU:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
OS:
Peripherals:
Monitors and resolution:

Have you sued DDU to uninstall your GPU drivers and reinstalled them using the latest revision?

I will give you all these details but first I would like to tell you that I think I found the problem, but I could not find the solution.

The problem seems to be that the drive for the monitors does not work:

I first tried uninstalling the associated software for the driver:

I downloaded a tool from NVIDIA that is supposed to install the proper driver. I did this and rebooted but I continued to have the same issue and nothing I did helped.

From the CMD set command:

Monitors and resolution:

There are two monitors. One is Compaq and the other is AOC

Here is the information abut the AOC:

the resolutions for the compaq are:
1600 x 1200

800 x 600

and this seems to be the case for both monitors.

I have done all the things you might expect I should do. Yes, I went out and bought Endust at Target, opened the case, and gave it a good dusting.
So, yes, I pulled out the card and put it back. This was part of the dusting effort.
The first thing I did was swap out the monitors. I concluded that either monitor will work in either of the two ports on the graphics card, but only one will work at a time for some reason.

And, yes, I did a system restore. Actaully, to be precise, I did a system recovery since my OS said that it was more than 10 days since I did a system recovery (or some such excuse).

No, I have not tried a system restore. I guess that is the next ting for me to try.

This is the information I got after a system reset

001_zpsce74g5ye.png

So, it seemed to be saying that all I needed to do is reboot my system.

After a reboot, this is what my Device Manager looked like:

002%20after%20the%20reboot_zpsaa4cikfd.png

So I decided to follow the instructions on the NVIDA web site:

003%20decide%20not%20to%20waste%20my%20time%20and%20go%20full%20throttle_zpsxw20d9uz.png

Here are the versions of the drivers I removed from my system

004%20the%20version%20I%20remove_zpsludb42ho.png

This the actual name of the installer for the driver

034%20recommended_zpsn6ozi7tp.png

After the install process, this is the list of components that the installer finally installed on my system

041%20what%20I%20installed_zpsjjmzruug.png

But it still does not work. My system still cannot recognize the other monitor. Please advise. It worked before and stopped suddenly and I am not sure what to do next.

Hi xarzu,

I think you are not having issues with your graphics driver. Make sure that you have the correct driver for your GPU is been installed.

Try going to the desktop, right click & click on properties, when the menu pops up. Next, select the "settings" tab. Use the drop down menu to select the second monitor. Select the appropriate resolution for your TV, and check the box "extend my windows desktop on 2nd monitor". That should do ya.

Of course, if you want to output the same screen to both, you will need to use the nVidia control panel.

When I right click on the desktop, then left click on "Display settings" and I ask the system to locate or identify the second monitor, it always fails and says so in red letters. This is the issue I am having.

Before I go into what I tried and what failed, let me ask you this. Is there a difference between the Display Drivers that I see in the Control Panel as software and the Display Adapter that is displayed in the Devise Manager. One seems to be software and the other seems to be firmware. It is the listing in the Device Manager that has the little yellow warning icon. I think this is what I need to have replaced, not the display drivers.

I unplugged my system from the internet because it seemed there were updates being downloaded while I was testing drivers. Then I first tried installing display drivers after I uninstalled the adapter from the device manager. This threw an error with each install. So I let my system install the "NVIDIA Gforce 8800 GTS" and then I used the NVIDIA web site, http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us
tell me what drivers I should pick for a WIndows 10 64 bit OS with this adapter. I got several. Each one I tried installed perfectly. But none of them fixed the problem where the system did not recognize the second monitor. I tried these:

341.74
341.81
341.92
341.95
341.96
341.98
342.00
342.01

I have given up and decided to go buy a new graphics card. Even if there is a software solution or update conflict, the bad voodoo this has brought has lead me to throw in the towel and start over. I will be making a new discussion thread for I have run into problems with the new graphics card. What fun.

Sigh, you could have just listed the specs in a simple manner. Well, now that I'm here...you forgot to mention your PSU. You're on Windows 10, good. Have you tried multiple driver revisions, yes but have you tried using DDU to uninstall your drivers and reinstalling your GPU drivers?

Have you ruled out that your installer isn't corrupted by recreating your bootable USB installer?
