Do I need both VGA and DVI-D cables for my monitor

Currently I have a standard VGA cable that is connected to both the monitor and the computer which when turned on, displays no signal. My PC has a graphics card that has dvi-d port, my question is do I need to buy VGA to DVI-D adapter only or a VGA to VGA/DVI-D splitter? It's my first time and I'm kinda a newbie about this. Thanks in advance!

When graphics card installed, the video ports on the motherboard do not work. Are there other ports available on the monitor?
