This is my first build of a modern high end PC. In the past my builds have always been on the cheap and therefore dated, so for the first time it's good to up to date with current technology.

The goal initially was to build a VR ready PC as cheap as possible. But many of the minimum spec parts have been unobtainable locally for me and somewhere along the way I forgot this and ended up buying slightly more expensive parts.

I could have built the PC for around $1000 but opted for a better MB, 8GB GPU instead of 4GB and 16GB RAM instead of 8GB. Those bits combined put me about $150-$200 over budget but at least the PC should be more future proof.

The specs

CPU - i5 6400 3.3GHz
GPU - Gigabyte Radeon 480 RX Gaming G1 8GB
MOBO - MSI H170 Gaming 3
RAM - Crucial Value 16GB Single DDR4 2133MHz
SSD - Kingston UV400 120GB
HDD - Seagate Barracuda 3.5" 7200RPM 1TB
DVD - LG DVD RW
PSU - Corsair CX650M Semi Modular
CASE - Corsair Carbide USB3.0 Spec-01

Personally I would go with a nvidia card, specifically the gtx 1060 6gb which is about the same price as your 480 RX.

What is the total cost of your build? It looks like you said it will cost you about 1150 - 1200? I could build a high end build with an i7 with that price, are you building this yourself or are these prices from somebody who will build it for you?

Get a faster CPU and drop the SSD if you to make up the difference. Get an SSD later when you can afford one.

This is Australian $ by the way...
Conversion to US$ x 0.73 = $839 US

Also part prices are different here. For example an RX 480 8GB is $245 at NewEgg when converted that $310 AUD. But here the 4GB versions sell for $350 AUD and the 8GB from $400!

I've already built it minus the optical drive and SSD. Haven't installed OS yet as I'm waiting for a DVI-D to VGA converter.

Also I'm wondering if I bought the wrong RAM? The Crucial website says its compatible http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/h170-gaming-m3/CT7897810 but the MSI website doesn't have it in it's list. It's non ECC, will it work?

Do you think it's possible to return the RAM? They said I can't return it if the package has been opened but I think it was just a plastic blister case with no seal, in which case they wouldn't even be able to tell...
