I'm looking into buying a GTX 1080 (Zotac Extreme) and a monitor but I don't know what monitor to buy. (I would have a GTX 1080 by the time I buy a monitor, so pretend like I've got a GTX 1080)

Some questions I have are:

-Should I go with 60hz or 144hz?

-I imagine 1440p is better than 1080p but what should I choose?

-Is g-sync a necessity? Is it worth it? How much better does it look like?

In case anyone is wondering, I looked at this similar post but the OP has a GTX 1070, I'm looking for a fitting monitor for a GTX 1080.

Solution
- wasted at 1080p
- slight overkill at 1440p/60Hz
- nice at 1440p/144Hz
- minimum to max at 2160p/60Hz

depending on the games you're playing, I'd go with a 1440p/144Hz or a 2160p/60Hz screen

G-Sync doesn't make anything look better. it makes everything run smoother.
it's a nice-to-have-feature but not mandatory.

G-Sync at 4k is a bit...it is pretty nice at 4k but you're effectively getting a range of 30-60Hz.
paying 150$ extra for a 30Hz G-Sync range might make a difference but still feels like a rip off.

at 2k with a 144/165Hz display it can be nice. if you're willing to spend on it and squeeze every last day out of GPUs before upgrading them.
still, it's a matter of if you're willing to spend that much money on G-Sync or just rather hit town with your friends and get a round of the biggest steaks of the city...

1080/144Hz is wasted on a 1080. a 1070 can deliver that quite easily. furthermore investing in a 1080p screen in 2017 seems kind of....well, it's like buying an AMD Bulldozer in 2017.
My phone can display 2k and I got it for free with the cheapest service plan of my phone company.

the 1080 can currently push 144fps @2k without too big of a problem (especially when tuning down AA which, let's face it, isn't all that necessary at higher resolutions)
but then it comes down to budget. of course an Asus P279Q is a really nice piece of tech (although far from issue-free) but you're paying 200€ extra for G-Sync with Asus. I doubt it's worth it.
with a TN like the P278Q the difference is not as heavy but it's still 175€.
that's a lot of cash.

Yea in reply to both of you guys, from what I read (thx btw), I think I'll be going with a 1440p 144Hz monitor. Regarding g-sync, I'll check out the prices of a few 1440p 144Hz monitors with and without g-sync.

Also, now that I'm replying to you guys, I might aswell ask you, TN or IPS panel?

The thing with IPS 1440p/144Hz is that the only screens that do not have major issues are pretty expensive, namely the Asus P279Q & the Eizo Foris FS2735 (and maybe the Asus MG279Q)

If you can and are willing to afford those an IPS looks just beautiful.
Otherwise I'd stick to TN in that class.
