Windows 10 update breaking USB sound device

Hello, some time ago the sound card on my motherboard stopped working, so I tried my luck and bought a super cheap generic USB sound card, and it has been working flawlessly for a couple of months.
Yesterday I let my pc update (actually it almost decided to restart by itself :/ ) and today my sound card has a very loud white noise hiss every time sound is playing through it. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the driver multiple times (by the way, I don't think Windows have ever demanded a system restart when uninstalling a sound driver before now).
But it keeps hissing even after driver re-install.
My pc seems completely useless without sound, how can I fix this?

Thanks,

It is just a normal Win10 security/system update, I updated to Win10 through a clean install about a year ago with no major issues. I have done a format once since then about 2 months ago.

Edit: Something that may be part of the issue is another problem I had a week ago (http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-3294142/suddenly-lag-spikes-games-dota.html)
In short, I installed a custom driver on the sound device, and it started a major issue with lag in games.
I "fixed" the issue by doing a system recovery from a month ago, which I am considering doing again (though not sure if this update will wreck my system recovery)

a system restore solved the issue - do I have to avoid windows system updates from now on ?
