Monitor picture goes black after a few seconds

On my SyncMaster 173s the desktop image shows at startup but goes black after a few seconds. It does this when conneted to desktop Windows 7 or laptop Windows XP. Any fix or just recycle and get anew one?

same thing happens in safemode in both windows? does the power light on the monitor power off, stay on or change color?

Hello ffg7,
The same thing happens in Safe Mode. The system tries to use the faulty monitor but the image only holds for a few seconds. The light has only one color, yellow. It flickers on and off when the system tries to use it. Thanks for your interest.
