Hi everyone, I'm going to type as much information as possible some of it may not be pertinent, so I apologize in advanced. So you don't have to waste your time reading everything, here is a TOC in regards to what everything I have is saying. Search the exact words of each "chapter" to move directly to that part.

1. More details about crashing, what I've done to try and fix the computer
2. WhoCrashed (HOME EDITION) v 5.53 readout of error
3. List of parts
4. dxdiag readout *edited to stay below 6500 characters
5. CMD sfc/ scannow readout (gets to 18% and fails)

1. More details about crashing, what I've done to try and fix the computer

If you do not want to read the full exploit, and I can understand why, just before #2 will be a list of pass and fails.

So the build is completely custom and has been stable for months now, #3 in the TOC has the list of parts. It's a stable build most of the time, only when I'm gaming does it fail and it fails randomly between 5 mins and never. I'm writing this up now on the same PC that crashes. According to everything I've read, the hal.dll error is a hardware error, possibly a driver error (though rare). That being said, GPU and MOBO drivers are uninstalled, reinstalled and updated. Including the ASUS GPU/MOBO controllers, TweakII/AI Suite 3 respectively. Thus far, I've unplugged and replugged my GPU, controller card, SDD/HDDs and even reseated my CPU and applied new Arctic thermal paste (after wiping it down with acetone in case anyone was wondering). I didn't unplug and replug the main power cables because the computer is turning on just fine and I hate how hard I have to press the 24pin (I think) power cord into the MOBO. Heat wise, both my GPU and PC have never gone above 80C. To be more specific, my GPU hits 74 on average and 78 on the most strenuous benchmarks. My PC has hit 76, but that was a spike once and I never saw it hit that again. I am using the stock coolers for both, though I do use Arctic 4 or whatever it is as thermal paste for the PC instead of the stock chalky stuff that comes on it.

The interesting part is that my steam account is on a HDD (known as the E: drive) and the HDD did come back with errors so I fixed them using the Windows error checking Properties>Tools>Error Checking>Check and is no longer reporting those errors. Most of my games are on the E drive, but I do have a few on the C drive (my SSD) and those are failing as well. I haven't tried to test the C drive because when I do, the PC says it needs to restart to check, but it just boots up like normal. I'm not sure if this is due to a problem with the C drive, or if the SSD is so small in size and fast, it checks it incredibly quickly. So it's possible 1 or both of these drives are failing.

Now, I've benchmarked and stress tested the GPU just fine with MSI Kombuster v3.5.1.0. That was at 1920x1080 and I let the test go for 20mins. The computer didn't crash and as I said above, never went above those heat numbers.

I used Windows Diagnostic Tool to check the RAM and that came back with 0 errors. I tried using memtest86 but was unable to boot from a USB ISO, more than likely due to user error. I can retry and look into it more if needed, but I swept the idea of the RAM being bad because the computer is stable unless I'm gaming.

I've tried using prime95 and the first time my computer did fine, the second it crashed after literally less than 30 seconds. There was only a minute or so break between the two tests. I have not tested it a third time.

I've tried checking the drives with sfc/scannow and it fails after 18%. #5 in the TOC is the readout of that failure.

Not sure if this is related, but Cortana isn't working for me either. In Event Viewer, I get alot of application errors including:

svchost (1340) SRUJet: The database page read from the file "C:\WINDOWS\system32\SRU\SRUDB.dat" at offset 12910592 (0x0000000000c50000) (database page 3151 (0xC4F)) for 4096 (0x00001000) bytes failed verification due to a page checksum mismatch. The stored checksum was [058b0c30903ce385] and the computed checksum was [3dab42544dd66ff2]. The read operation will fail with error -1018 (0xfffffc06). If this condition persists then please restore the database from a previous backup. This problem is likely due to faulty hardware. Please contact your hardware vendor for further assistance diagnosing the problem.

I do know the svchost is a Windows system application. The Cortana related error says:

Activation of app Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy!CortanaUI failed with error: The system has attempted to load or restore a file into the registry, but the specified file is not in a registry file format. See the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log for additional information.

I'm guessing the two errors are unrelated to each other, but possibly related to the crashing, especially that svchost which is why I'm commenting about it.

Below is a summary/list of everything I've written above.

Pass
Stress test/benchmark GPU with MSI Kombuster v3.5.1.0
Windows Diagnostic Tool (the RAM check)

Fail
2nd test with prime95 -I have not tried a 3rd time. The error is the same BSOD hal.dll
CMD, the sfc/ scannow fails at 18%. #5 in TOC has the readout

Possible fixes
Reseat/replugged everything with the exception of my 24-pin power cord into the MOBO
Fixed errors on E drive (which is a HDD), possibly fixed C drive (SSD) details above.

2. WhoCrashed (HOME EDITION) v 5.53 readout of error

This is the latest one since they all say the same thing. I also put the conclusion, though there doesn't seem to be anything helpful in it.

crash dump file: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\012117-29656-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: hal.dll (hal+0x3627F)

description: Hardware Abstraction Layer DLL
Bug check description: This bug check indicates that a fatal hardware error has occurred. This bug check uses the error data that is provided by the Windows Hardware Error Architecture (WHEA).
This is likely to be caused by a hardware problem problem. This problem might also be caused because of overheating (thermal issue).
The crash took place in a standard Microsoft module. Your system configuration may be incorrect. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver on your system that cannot be identified at this time.

Conclusion
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

9 crash dumps have been found and analyzed. Only 5 are included in this report. No offending third party drivers have been found. Connsider using WhoCrashed Professional which offers more detailed analysis using symbol resolution. Also configuring your system to produce a full memory dump may help you.

Read the topic general suggestions for troubleshooting system crashes for more information.

Note that it's not always possible to state with certainty whether a reported driver is responsible for crashing your system or that the root cause is in another module. Nonetheless it's suggested you look for updates for the products that these drivers belong to and regularly visit Windows update or enable automatic updates for Windows. In case a piece of malfunctioning hardware is causing trouble, a search with Google on the bug check errors together with the model name and brand of your computer may help you investigate this further.

Solution
for bugcheck ox124 you should provide the actual c:\windows\minidump *.dmp files
they can be looked at with the windows debugger to determine a likely cause of this failure.

generally, a bugcheck 0x124 while gaming means your GPU pulled too much power from the PCI/e bus and the motherboard logic reset your CPU to prevent the graphics slot from melting.

you would check the power connections from the PSU directly to the GPU, and make sure the GPU is not overheating.

the system up timer in the memory dump will tell you if the bugcheck 0x124 is a motherboard reset or if it is from the CPU overheating or from the PCI/e bus.
