Hello

I have been asked by a work colleague to build him a tasty PC for about £2000(roughly$4000)

at the moment i have a few ideas and i would like your advice on what i should go for.

for the CPU there are a few options
i was looking at the

Intel Core 2 Extreme Quad Core QX9650 S775 3.0GHz 1333MHz FSB 45nm Yorkfield Core 12MB Cache, Retail (£668)
Intel Core 2 Quad Extreme QX6850, Socket 775, 3.00 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB, 8MB Cache, Retail (£587)
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700, S775, 2.66 GHz, 1066MHz FSB, Kentsfield Core, 8MB Cache, Retail(£318)
Intel Core 2 Quad-Core Q6600 G0 SLACR, 95W, S775, 2.40 GHz, 1066MHz FSB, 8MB Cache, OEM (£155)
AMD Phenom 9700 Quad-Core - skt AM2 + - 2400Mhz - 4MB Cache - 125watts (£189.16)

but since not really many programs utilise 4 cores it seems a bit of a waste of money and if we went for a really good dual core processor for less money say the
Intel Core 2 Duo E6850, S775, 3.0 GHz, 1333MHz FSB, Conroe Core, 4MB Cache, Retail (£164)
and the money we save from that can be used in 2 years time to upgrade to a much better processor.
so next question is what would be the best motherboard to go with? i mean if we are going with the Dual core option we would be looking at something that was future proof for another couple of years.
i heard some of the new AM2+ mobos are supposed to be fairly future proof. any suggestions.

the next question is graphics cards.
2 options i have but if anyone has a better idea then please advise.
option 1 would be to have 1 geforce 8800 GTX ultra
768MB Asus 8800 Ultra, PCI-E (x16), Mem 2160 MHz, GDDR3, GPU 612 MHz (£397)
or go for 2 8800 GTX in SLI
2x 768MB ScanFX 8800GTX, PCI-E (x16), Mem 1800 MHz, GDDR3, GPU 575 MHz(£566)

the thing i worry about the 8800 is that it has been out for quite a while now and whether its worth waiting a bit and getting the next generation of Nvidia cards. i dont see us building this computer until January time anyway.

right the last question.

Flash drives? any good?
i was thinkning of plonking in a
Hitachi Deskstar T7K500 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache (£69.31) for storage
and then possibly going for
Samsung MCAQE32G5APP-0XA00 32GB 2.5" Solid State Hard Drive(£223) just for a gaming drive.
question, if we went with the solid state drive would installing windows on it be a good idea?
if we dont go for the solid state drive then i was thinking about the
Western Digital Raptor 150GB 10000RPM SATA 16MB Cache (£126.89)

basically those items are what i need information on.
oh yeah with regards to the motherboard issue am i better to wait and get a DDR3 supported motherboard?

if you guys have any good ideas i would be very happy.

the £2000 is really only a guide line but im sure i could go over or under.
oo also whats a good monitor to go for,
either 2 screens or 1 big screen.

Thanks for your time
Fras

I'll have spent about £1500 by the time I've finished my upgrade. :)
Oh and a brit!! :bounce: :bounce: :D
Well I'm going for a couple of 150Gb Raptor's in RAID 0 for program drives, will carry on using my 300Gb SATA Seagate for a data drive and use a 36Gb Raptor for a Windows boot drive.
I like the idea of an SSD but I'd like them to boot games from and for that, they are just way too much for me to justify. In comparison, XFX raid controller @ scan.co.uk is £25 2X150Gb Raptor X's are £250 so for £275 approx you have RAID 0 raptor's @ 300Gb or a 32Gb SSD. To me, it's too much.

If it was my money I'd go Q6600, I have a couple of machines at work that are QX6850 & 8800GTX based with DDR2 1066 Dominator RAM, they are no quicker than my home machine and considering the processor is the cost of a decent mobo, RAM & CPU it's just a ****-waving exercise :p It is, if you just use it for gaming anyway :D

What is the difference between say a 24" lcd monitor and a 32" LCD TV?
They both are roughly the same price but the 32" obviously has the advantage of being a TV as well as a monitor.

Can LCD tv's be used as monitors?

see im in 3 minds about what to do for a screen setup
i was thinking about a 24" for my main display and alo having 2 20.1" for right of my 24" and one left to give me a nice multiple display.

but then again i thought about buying a 32" or bigger and just using that. what are your thoughts?
