Question about high FPS and refresh rate?

I was just wondering if fps that goes higher than your refresh rate is a bad thing? For instance my monitor's refresh rate is 144hz, would it be bad if the game I'm playing runs constantly over 200fps? Should I use a fps limiter to lock it to 144fps? I just don't want my graphics card to blow up or anything.

You're not hurting anything by running a higher FPS than the refresh rate of the monitor.

That being said, your 144Hz monitor can only display 144fps maximum. Anything above any frames beyond the 144 per second will simply not be displayed, but certainly won't hurt anything.
