Hello,

I run:
i7 920
Asrock x58 Xtreme MoBo
3x2GB Corsair @533 DDR3 triple channel
Radeon HD 5870 GPU
Seasonic 600W PSU

lately I have been kind of stuck in the middle when trying to decide wether to upgrade my PC or to wait some more until I saved some more money to go all out and buy the whole rig and some peripherals. Upgrading the PC mainly meant to upgrade the GPU and OC the CPU. I have been eyeing the R9 380x.

I look for your advice since I'm not sure is it worth OC-ing the i7 920 at all and still run the risk of bottlenecking the GPU. I would also need to add another 35$ for an aftermarket cooler on top of that expense.

What do you think, would it work properly if I OC'd somewhat below 4.0GHZ?

If you have the I7 920 at stock now, when yes its worth overclock it. An OC to 4 GHz and upgrade that old slow GPU you would have a nice gaming rig again. But get a proper CPU cooler. These cpu getting hot when oc. Be aware of that there are two revision of I7 920 CO and DO. CO tends to need more voltage and not overclock nealy as good as a DO. I know by fact that I7 920 DO can hit 4 Ghz+.

But If i where you i try to look after a used GTX 970/980. not as power hungry as a R390X and more or less just as fast. If its AMD GPU you want, then try to Find A RX470 cause they just as the GTX 900 serie gpu´s uses less power.

These are the settings i used for at 4 GHz clock on my I7 920 before i swapped it out for a I7 980X.

Now with an I7 980X

I telling this cause you also have the option to upgrade to an 6 core LGA 1366 CPU, if you want a cheap cpu upgrade.

Thank you very much for the answer. I'll sit down and consider the other two GPUs mentioned. I'm on a tight budget and believe that i7 will have to sufice for now.
