My VGA cable fits into my monitor but not the DVI-D port on my gpu.

This is my first time building a PC. My issue is that my VGA cable will fit into my monitor however not the port on my graphics card. I am pretty sure I am not doing something wrong but that I need an adapter. Please correct me there.

My monitor is
