i7 4790k or wait for Ryzen 5?

I was going to get an i7 4790k as I have enough for it now and it would just be a plug in and play situation as I have a compatible motherboard, but with Ryzen 5 being announced I was wondering if I should wait?

Since I do more than gaming - I do 3D modelling/art as work and sometimes video editing and because the highest end ryzen 5 model - the 1600x has six cores and 12 threads, would it be a better performer of these other tasks than the i7 4790k.

Or should I just stick with getting the i7 4790k?

Thanks for any responses.

Ok thanks, I knew that I would have to get all new motherboard and RAM but i would be willing to save up, I was just wondering that if it would be better at 3d modelling tasks and video editing than the I7 4790k?

Is the Ryzen 7 1700 too expensive for you?

Otherwise, the 1600X should deliver better performance in video editing/modelling tasks compared to any of Intel's 4C/8T CPU offering.

I thought this would be the case, but would it be worth the wait or should i just get the 4790k now you think?

I could save for Ryzen 7 1700 but I just thought that the 1600x is cheaper and is in the middle with the Core and thread count as it seems that AMD aims the ryzen 7 models as workload whereas i want something in the middle.

I think the i7 4790K is good enough regardless of cores and threads - You play games or whatever.

Ryzen CPU going be cheap exchange for performance decrease but higher cores and threads.

looking at it now i may go for the 1700 because the workload score is a lot better than the 4790k and the difference in gaming is not that much at all, as long as it is better than what i got now for gaming i'm fine with it, its more for the workload that i want to improve.

It is not just for gaming that I would want the cpu for, its also for workloads such as rendering scenes for 3d modeling and rendering video.

On the other hand, a 6 core R5 1600 should be around $150 less than a 4790k, and that difference could be used for a Ryzen-compatible motherboard. And if the 1600 overclocks like the 1700 does, it might end up with comparable per-core performance to the higher-end Ryzens. In any case, the R5 Ryzen reviews should be coming out in a couple weeks or so, so it might not be a bad idea to wait a bit and see how their performance fares, unless you absolutely need faster hardware right away.

No i can wait, I was just wondering which one would be a better choice and currently I have my eyes on the 1700 as I will be able to get enough for it within 3 months and as long as it is better than the i5 4690 at gaming i am ok but i am really more interested in the rendering speeds.

If I answered your rendering question above, it does not mean I need to re-mention the rendering performance. I've already told you that RYZEN is better in workstation tasks.

Sorry, about that. I am going to to save and get the 1700 now, thanks for the help.
