Losing display (DVI) signal when switching sources

Hey everyone, this has been driving me crazy for several weeks and I cannot find a solution. When I have my work laptop hooked up to my monitor via VGA, I will lose signal of my desktop (DVI) if I don't switch back every 5-10 minutes. After that there is no signal to the monitor, I have tried unplugging and plugging back in the cable from my desktop to monitor but the only thing that works is a hard reset from the desktop to restore signal to my monitor. If anyone could please shed some light on why this happens I would be so grateful.. Thanks in advance.

Check power setings on the desktop. It is most likely set to turn off the monitor after 10 minutes.
You should be able to wake it up just by moving the mouse or pressing a key.
Alternatively, change the power settings to never turn off the monitor.

Interesting, I checked my settings and display is set to sleep after 1 hour, seems like too long of a gap but I may just be off with my timing. Now that I think about it, it would not boot up before moving the mouse or hitting a key, seems odd. I have adjusted and will see if I continue to have an issue with this, thanks for pointing that out!!

It may not be booting up, it might be starting from sleep or hibernation. Check these times in power settings too.
