Just bought a brand new headset w/ mic but my computer uses the headset as the microphone rather then the actual mic

I just bought a brand new headset w/mic and took it home and plugged it into the mic jack but my computer wants to use the headset as the microphone instead of the actual mic on the headset. IDK if this is the right place to post this or not but I really need help with this. the headset w/ mic has one cord on it but my laptop has a mic and speaker ports. whenever I speak into the mic part its super low but whenever I speak into the headset part it is perfectly fine.
