Not sure this is the correct place on the forum, but here goes...

Ok, so I just sold my Xbox One to try to move into PC gaming more. I built a cheap system about 4 years ago using a barebones kit from TigerDirect and it's time to upgrade pretty much everything. My plan is to try to do it in two stages and hopefully at the end of it come out with a PC that can match the X1 in graphical output. There are a couple of things that will stay constant through the build, namely my Asus VG248QE monitor and my 3 hard drives (normal HDD, nothing special, but a lot of data to move around) Someday an SSD might show up and I will try to switch Win10 over to it, but somehow every time I try to migrate an OS to another drive, something happens. Thats for a different thread though... on to the build

My current cheap budget build... (dont laugh, I said it was cheap)
AMD FX6100
Gigabyte GA-78LMT mobo
ATI HD7770 GPU
4gb Patriot Viper DDR3 1333mhz
Zalman cooler
XFX TS 550w PSU (this was an upgrade from about a year ago after the budget PSU died)

1st upgrade coming next week hopefully
Core i5 7600K
MSI Pro Series B250 ATX mobo
ATI HD7770 GPU
8gb Ballistix Sport 2400mhz DDR4 RAM
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo Cooler
XFX TS 550w PSU

Stage 2 will come later this year...

Core i5 7600K
MSI Pro Series B250 ATX mobo
16gb Ballistix Sport 2400mhz DDR4 RAM (up from 8)
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo cooler
XFX TS 550w PSU
GTX 1060 3gb GPU (new)
Intel Optane 16gb (new)

Other than the fact that the B series cant be OC'd, anyone see any issues with running say Call of Duty or Grand Theft Auto here? Keep in mind the monitor maxes out at 1920x1080, so I wont be running any super high resolutions here, but I will be running the 144hz refresh rate (as I am doing currently with my HD7770)

I don't see any issues other than a huge waste of money getting an i6 7600k + CM 212 Evo + B250 motherboard. If you're already aware the B250 won't overclock, why waste so much money of the 7600k and cooler? You could drop to an i5 7500, use the stock cooler and almost be able to afford a new RX460 which would be a HUGE upgrade over your 7770.

In terms of money, the 7600k and cooler are $50 more than the 7500. If my reading is correct, the 7600k is approximately 20% faster than the 7500 in benchmark testing. Ok granted the $25 cooler might be a waste, but the CPUs themselves are only $25 difference on Amazon. Im willing to spend $25 on a 20% speed increase. Why would I spend $89 on an RX460 when Im looking to go to a GTX1060 in 8 months (or less?) Yes it's a big boost right now, but if I want to run Forza Motorsport 7 when it comes out in the fall, that RX460 isnt going to cut it. Im basing FM7's specs on Forza Horizon 3 which is available now. FH3 wants a GTX1060 as recommended and a 980ti for Ultra (as per Game-Debate.com)

Maybe Im way off base with the performance numbers, is this link accurate? http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-7600K-vs-Intel-Core-i5-7500/3885vs3648

I appreciate your response, but Im not sure it makes the most sense for me. Again, if the userbenchmark numbers are way off, then I agree the 7600 isnt worth it.

The Optane was more a fleeting thought than a definitive set in stone thing. Obviously the most expendable item on the list. Thanks for the advice.

The price difference in USD is more like $65

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-7600K 3.8GHz Quad-Core Processor ($228.89 @ OutletPC)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($24.88 @ OutletPC)
Total: $253.77

vs

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-7500 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($188.89 @ OutletPC)
Total: $188.89

You're seeing a +20% benchmark difference between the two because you are seeing overclocked 7600k results and not 7600k stock speed results. The real life difference between the two both at stock speeds would be more like 8-10% at most.

I wasn't REALLY recommending the RX460

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MRRPPQS/ref=crt_ewc_title_gw_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Im a Prime member, so I get the free 2 day shipping on Amazon. OutletPC is $8 standard shipping, so $229 for the 7600 on Amazon vs $188+$8 for the 7500 on OutletPC... difference is $33. Like you pointed out, the cooler is not really needed, so no need to compare it in the pricing either.

More of the point in the original post was if my final system would match or exceed the game play I got from my Xbox One. Yes I said Im on a budget, but that's more to stop suggestions of going with an i7 and 32gb of RAM and a GTX1080 or whatever else. I've got just under $400 for stage one (less if Im not nice to the wife) and right now my Amazon cart is reading $369 (without the cooler now)

I gotcha on wanting to buy from amazon. Keep in my that the i5 7600k does not come with a cpu cooler at all so it HAS to be included in the price.

To answer your original question, yes, it would be a lot better than an xbox.

Oh well thank you for the extra info, I didnt know the 7600 didnt come with one. Sometimes if you arent looking in just the right places, that information is easy to miss.

I got to thinking about it quite a bit today, and you're right. I reworked my Amazon cart and ended up with the same mobo, the i5 7500 and 16GB of Viper Elite 2666mhz RAM instead of the 8GB Ballistix 2400ghz. That should pretty much future proof my RAM needs for a few years and take one less item in Stage 2 to buy (Basically all I need now is the GPU) Thanks for all the advice from everyone. The way Im looking at it, if I made my cheap budget build work for 4 years using hardware that had 2 year old architecture at that time, I shouldnt need an upgrade on this machine in a while.

Just wanted to update and say thank you to CTurbo. I did end up getting the i5 7500. The RAM ultimately ended up being 16gb Crucial 2133mhz due to the Viper Elite not being available for 2 weeks. The mobo also changed slightly, got the MSi B250M Bazooka. Went over budget slightly and had to smooth things out with the wife, but overall, loving this new setup. Now I just need to get that dang GTX 1060 and I will be all set. My poor HD 7770 is a real bottleneck right now. It's crying in there, saying, please stop abusing me!!
