NAS connected to Gigabit-Switch, will FastEthernet Router impact performance?

Hey guys!

I have a question: I want to buy a Synology DS216J NAS.
My network setup would be:

NAS connected to ROUTER
ROUTER connected to PC.

Since my ROUTER only has 100 Mbit Ethernet ports, my performance would be rather bad. What if I bought a Gigabit Switch and set my network up like this:

NAS connected to GIGABIT-SWITCH
PC connected to GIGABIT-SWITCH
GIGABIT-SWITCH connected to ROUTER.

Would I have better performance or would my traffic from my PC to my NAS still cross my ROUTER?

Thanks in advance,
DarkTron

Yes that would be much better.

If the PC's and NAS are on that switch then the data does not need to travel up to the router, thus it can stay on the gigabit ports of the switch.
For any device connected directly to router (wired or wireless) then those devices will only every achieve 100mbps speed.

Now with that said if your router doesnt even have gigabit LAN ports, you need to upgrade, even cheap models have had gigabit LAN for 5-7 years now.

Thanks very much, I will get a switch then. When accessing my NAS from outside my home network, it will be bottlenecked by my internet connection speed of my provider anyways.
